I am not going to write a long blog post, but rather cut to the chase. Google has double standards if you ask me. Google Penguin penalises link spam, negative SEO or what ever you would like to call it, right? Ok well here is proof that Google is partaking in the same schemes as they say they are penalising.
Recently Webpronews.com published an article on WPMU.org that was hit by the penguin update. You can go read the full story, but the bottom line is that there were a majority of footer links to WPMU.org which was not even a result of their efforts and they still got penalised by Google.
So yes this post of mine is not even Google Panda friendly due to the fact that the amount of words is so few, but hey I just wanted to make my point that Google has double standards when looking at the Penguin update and Negative SEO.
Did tweet this to Matt Cutts as well:
Hey @mattcutts These Google sites have sponsored footer links followed? Is this not also spam?t.co/jpO8Ql2V @dannysullivan @randfish

Hope you have some comments or at least share this post with others so they at least can see the evidence.
